What are BCAAs?

BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) comprise three amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. These three amino acids are known as ‘essential’ amino acids, meaning that our bodies do not have the enzymes necessary to synthesise them and they must therefore be obtained from food.

BCAAs make up about one-third of muscle proteins. In the context of protein synthesis and degradation, leucine plays an important role in muscle anabolism and reducing catabolism, but it needs isoleucine and valine to produce this effect over the long term.

Leucine is also oxidised in the muscles and can be used as fuel during exercise, unlike most other amino acids.

BCAAs, essential amino acids

Leucine: It is essential for protein synthesis and muscle recovery.

Isoleucine: It plays a role in muscle metabolism, as well as immune function and energy regulation.

Valine: It helps stimulate muscle growth and promotes recovery while contributing to energy production.

The 2.1.1 ratio: the ideal mix?

Our BCAA has an optimal ratio of 2.1.1 in leucine, isoleucine and valine, i.e. two parts leucine to one part valine and isoleucine. From a physiological point of view, this ratio is the same as that found in our muscle tissue.

Leucine is the main branched-chain amino acid involved in stimulating the mTOR protein responsible for protein synthesis, which is why it is found in greater quantities in muscle tissue.
