Collagen, an essential structural protein

Collagen is the body’s primary fibrous and insoluble protein. It is a “structural” protein, meaning it contributes to the structure of the human body. It is found in abundance in connective tissues such as skin, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bones.

Regarding sources of collagen, the body naturally produces collagen from amino acids (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline) with the help of vitamin C, zinc, and copper. Dietary collagen can be found in fish skin and meat, egg membranes, gelatin, and bone broths.

To naturally stimulate collagen production, it is important to eat foods rich in vitamin C (kiwi, citrus fruits, peppers…), to include bone broth or gelatin in your diet, and above all to avoid tobacco and sugar, and to promote good sleep and hydration.

The main types of collagen

There are at least 28 types of collagen, however the most common are:

Type I : skin, tendons, bones, ligaments (the most abundant in the body)

Type II : cartilage

Type III : skin, muscles, blood vessels

Type IV : basal lamina (cell structures)

Type V : hair, placenta, cornea.

Why is collagen important with age?

Collagen plays a crucial role in maintaining the structure, firmness, and strength of body tissues. It has been observed that from the age of 25-30, natural collagen production gradually decreases by 1% per year, which can lead to:

  • Joint pain
  • Skin less firm and less elastic
  • Appearance of wrinkles
  • Bone fragility

Are collagen supplements useful?

Collagen supplementation can be particularly beneficial depending on the type of collagen used, its quality, and the specific goal (skin, joints, bones, etc.). Studies have shown:

Joint and bone health : pain reduction and improved mobility.

Muscle and tendon recovery : reduction of tendon pain and improved muscle recovery.

Skin beauty : improved skin elasticity and hydration, as well as a reduction in wrinkles and fine lines.

Hair and nails : slowing of hair loss and improved nail strength.
